Installation style guide
Floating vs freestanding bathroom vanities.
Both can create a calm, architectural bathroom. The better choice depends on the wall, floor, plumbing, cleaning routine, storage priorities, and the installation team available for the project.
At a glance
Compare the room effect and the work behind it.
Installation labels describe how the vanity meets the room; they do not replace the fixing, plumbing, or product instructions for the selected model.
| Planning point | Floating vanity | Freestanding vanity |
|---|---|---|
| Visual effect | Exposes more floor and creates a lighter horizontal line | Creates a grounded, furniture-like presence |
| Primary support | Depends on a verified wall structure and the specified fixings | Transfers weight to the floor but may still require secure wall fixing |
| Floor cleaning | Open space beneath the cabinet can be reached directly | A plinth, legs, or cabinet base changes access beneath and around it |
| Plumbing | Services may be more visually exposed and need deliberate positioning | The cabinet volume may provide more room to conceal services, depending on the design |
| Renovation planning | Wall preparation and finished mounting height must be established early | Floor level, base detail, and final wall restraint remain important |
Choose floating when
You want the floor to remain visually open.
- The lighter visual line suits the room concept.
- The wall construction and fixing points can be verified before ordering.
- The plumbing can be placed cleanly within the selected cabinet layout.
- The installer can set and document the final mounting height.
Choose freestanding when
You want a grounded furniture presence.
- A floor-supported form suits the room and storage plan.
- The base, legs, or plinth can sit correctly on the finished floor.
- The selected design provides the service access your plumbing needs.
- Wall restraint and installation instructions can still be followed.
Installation reality
Support and services decide the final answer.
Do not choose from appearance alone. Confirm the wall build-up, fixing zones, floor level, water and waste positions, power requirements, waterproofing interfaces, and access for future maintenance.
Use qualified trades and follow the selected product instructions together with applicable local building, plumbing, and electrical requirements.
